WWTPs and septic tanks

Why are biological wastewater treatment plants better than septic tanks?

We often talk about “biological septic tanks” and their role in water treatment, although in fact biological sewage treatment plants and septic tanks are not the same thing. A sewage treatment plant is the next step in the water treatment system, a much more reliable, efficient and modern alternative to septic tanks. They work according to the biological principle, where microorganisms (activated sludge) purify water by means of an
alternating air and airless environment. Let me briefly outline the difference between biological WWTPs and septic tanks and the main advantages of the former.

A biological wastewater treatment plant is an improved version of a septic tank, which means it works under any conditions and with much greater efficiency. It cleans wastewater faster and, thanks to its robustness and compact design, can be installed in any type of ground and at all groundwater levels. It does not require post-treatment,unlike a septic tank.

As mentioned above, ENVI-PUR treatment plants operate on the biological principle. Water treatment contains two stages: aerobic and anaerobic ones. Microorganisms living in WWTP purify water, while oxygen provides favourable conditions for their vital functions. This enables complete purification of wastewater. As a result, there is no unpleasant odour, no sludge (if it is present in small quantities, it can be pumped out into compost) and no pumping costs

Sewage treatment in septic tanks only has 1 stage – anaerobic, or airless. In this case, purification is incomplete. Treated water has to undergo additional filtration before it reaches the soil. Organic particles are purified in the filtration field, which together with a septic tank occupies much space on the site. Such water cannot be reused. On the other hand, ENVI-PUR wastewater treatment plants guarantee water purification of up to 98%, and the water can and should be recycled. It can be used for irrigation directly from the plant.

In addition, domestic WWTPs are almost always smaller than a septic tank, which means lesser costs of excavation work. Purchase price of a septic may be lower than that of a biological treatment plant, but this is only at the beginning. As far as maintenance is concerned, the sludge from the septic needs to be pumped out every year using a special machine. In case of a WWTP, it is only required to periodically reset the station, which can be done yourself.

The installation of a septic tank cannot be done independently; this can only be done in the case of a wastewater treatment plant

The advantages of a WWTP compared to a septic tank are obvious:

  • Robustness and advanced technology allow it to work under any conditions,
  • High level of sewage purification,
  • Water reclamation and savings on bills,
  • Compactness and cost-effectiveness – saving on excavation work and more options for installation,
  • Installation can be done yourself
  • A station only requires to be reset periodically.

In our catalogue you can choose a suitable WWTP for your home, cottage, restaurant, hotel and other facilities.
